Hypocrite Fish
Of course we do, we have a national design award. The 2026 Australian Good Design awards is sort of the Eureka prizes for the slightly more honest. Or the Brownlows for the uncoordinated.
To win, products need to be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, with innovation and societal impact among the key criteria. Commercial success doesn’t factor into it, of course.
One of this year’s winners, and there’s many of them (every child gets an award in Club Oz), is the Holy Carp!
The Holy Carp! is a plastic-free, compostable alternative to those little plastic soy-sauce fish bottles, which are about to get banned because of the giant plastic island in the Pacific, microplastics in your brains and choking turtles.
The Holy Carp! is made from sugar cane bagasse and is compostible.
But get this – the thing is apparently spill and leak resistant, and can even hold soy sauce for more than 48 hours. Then it turns into a soggy mess.
It makes me wonder if they are going to ban those little plastic bags that people pick up their dog’s turds with. And replace them with aesthetically pleasing paper bags?
