Some people in Belgium wanted to protect a forest when they built a high-speed railway right through it.

They thought that cutting enough trees back to prevent them falling on the trains would defeat the point.

So instead they built a 3.4 km reinforced-concrete shed which the train went through, so they didn’t have to cut too many trees.

Then they covered the roof of the shed in 16,000 solar panels to give it green credentials, which makes me suspect there isn’t much shade up there, so the trees must be a fair way back.
