The tertiary education sector is shitting it self right now.

Increasingly it is becoming apparent that just about eveything they teach can be done by AI.

Either directly through a dedicated education LLM front end, directly with chat, or through the usual models but with the content constructed by machines.

Previously tertiary education relied on incredible information assymetry – they knew it and the students didn’t. That gave them power to create a single channel they could profitably exploit.

AI has killed that underlying information asymmetry. Anyone, including students, can now learn as much as they need about any subject. Even the practice of it, if practice is limited to a screen , like so many modern jobs are.

Initial signs are that small content creators are popping up everywhere to create and sell education content. Academics are using AI to create their courses.

Universities retain control over recognised credentials but I wonder how long before the work force stops believeing in these, or simply doesn’t need the graduates.

The suggested response:

1. For academics, double down on research capabilities
2. For universities and colleges, focus on high quality certification and outsource the education part
3. For students, pray.
