What came first? Well it’s not the shell, that’s for sure.

I started wondering why eggs are ovoid and not spherical. It turns out it’s the result of peristaltic pressure on the liquid egg…

The yolk begins as a roughly spherical liquid object.

As it travels down the oviduct albumen is deposited around it while the contents rotate.

Shell membranes form around the soft mass.

Muscular pressure and the geometry of the oviduct shape that mass into the familiar oval before the shell hardens around it.

So basically a chicken is an organic 3D printer.
