Proxy War
“Polls show that roughly 70% to 75% of Americans oppose building large data centers near their homes, and more than half support a national moratorium.” When quizzed, they say it’s just the vibe of thing. Can’t they set them up in Texas or Arizona or something?
Americans would presumably give similar answers about power stations, transmission lines, warehouses, prisons and rubbish dumps while continuing to consume their outputs.
Of course the chattering classes use this as proof that the peeps are turning on AI.
It is a proxy war being fought by carbon small language model machines against the silicon large language model machines and their carbon-based owners.
