Sean Kelly has written about the rise of One Nation, but he completely misses the underlying issue. He thinks it’s entirely racism.
These voters aren’t suddenly annoyed with Albanese. They’ve been annoyed for a very long time.
They are in the bottom half of the economic bell curve. They have less capacity to absorb higher costs that keep going up relative to their incomes.
They also have a background distaste for ever-increasing complexity and compliance, driven by government-led rules and regulations supposedly designed to protect them from every conceivable evil.
Then there is immigration.
Some blame immigration for housing and cost-of-living pressures. Others don’t.
But they can all see the same thing: the major parties aren’t going to change anything.
And they’ve given them a fair chance.
One hundred and twenty-five years of alternating governments is a pretty reasonable trial period.
The major parties naturally protect established interests, whether they know it or not.
And you can’t do that at the same time as looking after the little people, especially when things are going backwards.
The mistake the established interests made was giving the little people a vote in the first place. They were pretty confident of their ability to control the narrative, before the internet.
Sadly, One Nation and their ilk seem to be special interest groups, trading on the little people’s grievances and simplicity.
