Don’t touch the crystals
It’s a great word, vug.
It’s any hole in a geological formation that’s lined with crystals.
If a vug is surrounded by a different rock to the crystals and you could, if you wanted to, extract it from the surrounding formation, it becomes a geode.
However, a vug does not become a geode merely because somebody excavates around it. Excavation reveals whether it is a vug or a geode.
All geodes are vugs but not all vugs are geodes.
And that’s all anyone ever needs to know on the matter.
Searching for the world’s largest geode reveals the problem:
The largest crystal-lined vug marketed as a geode: Crystal Cave, Ohio.
The largest visitable gypsum vug marketed as a geode: Pulpí, Spain.
The largest Guinness-recorded amethyst geode specimen: 13-tonne Uruguayan specimen housed in China.
The Crystal Castle near Byron Bay displays the Enchanted Cave, a 20-tonne self-contained amethyst geode from Uruguay, which is the largest known self-contained amethyst geode ever discovered. They also have a 10-tonne Dragon Egg geode (see below). However being Buddhists they can’t be arsed applying to the Guinness people.
That tells you something about the Guinness book; you have been warned.
