Hope explained
The unique aspect of football is that, unlike most sports, the best team doesn’t always win. Sometimes they even lose.
The practical implication of this is that, if your team loses, you can realistically delude yourself that they were dudded by a bus, the ref, some cheating, VAR, the gods, the weather, the pitch, the ball, or near equivalent.
Which keeps your interest alive even when your team is shite.
So don’t make the goals bigger. Get rid of them altogether and award points on aesthetic grounds just like boxing.
Postscript: Or, what about scoring if you manage to hit the goalie with the ball? No goals. Just tag the goalie. That’d be hilarious.
